Read this if you’re scared to move to Florida because of Hurricanes

I’m willing to make a bet…

You live in New York/California/Midwest and your #1 concern about moving to Florida is hurricanes…but you don’t actually know anything about hurricane protection.

I know, because I’m guilty of the same 🙋🏻‍♀️

When I moved here, my #1 question was “what about hurricane season?”

And now that I’ve lived here for a while, I know the question to ask isn’t “what if we get a big hurricane?” but “what kind of storm protection does this house have?”

Because when you’re talking about withstanding a hurricane, you want to know a couple things:

✅ what kind of construction was used to build the house (is it framed or concrete blocks?)
✅ how old is the roof and has a wind mitigation been done?
✅ is the house in the FEMA flood plain or a coastal evacuation zone?
✅ what kind of protection is on the windows (impact windows, accordion shutters or metal shutters?)
✅ how frequently do homes in the neighborhood lose power during a storm and does the house have a generator?

Here’s the thing: my friend who’s a home inspector likes to say “these homes are built like fortresses”—and it’s because they are. Concrete block homes can withstand winds of up to 200 mph (!!!). Impact windows resist winds of 170-200mph and resist shattering when struck.

Realistically, your bigger concern during a storm are going to be losing power or downed trees. If you buy a home with proper storm protection, it’s not going to blow away from the big bad wolf 🌀 But you might lose power, and limbs and trees can cause hazards to your roof and structure.

So yeah, hurricanes can be scary! But South Florida isn’t new here. Our homes are built to keep you safe so you can worry about more important things ☀️

Thinking about moving to FL and worried about storms? Hit me up and I’ll talk you through it!
